Good article on religion in the U.S. in the WSJ a few days ago. I know some who believe that "religious drifting", "cherry picking", or "shopping cart Judaism" is a problem even within Orthodox Judaism, but I'm not going to go there.
Chareidim might disagree with me, but - At least from my perspective, shopping cart Judaism within the Torah world is a positive, not a negative. A modern orthodox Jew can be inspired by chassidus,be excited by the whole idea of Torah Lishmah, and be a believer in secular studies. True, they may contradict each other at times, but generally, there is much more to gain than to lose.
